It Takes a Village (and our village is the best village!)

So as you can tell, I am a bit behind this weekend! Sorry! I was struggling to come up with a menu I really liked (especially since I have several really large special orders this week), and I was also busy doing mom/non-bakery things.

But now that I say that, I realize how much this little bakery has somehow become part of my everyday normal/mom life.

Friday afternoon, when I would usually be finalizing the menu and getting ready for the following week, we were up at Flint Hill supporting Bensten. He was kicking off the annual Homecoming bonfire and doing what he loves best - getting his school hyped up for the football game.

While we were waiting for everything to begin, a woman came up to me and said, “I have never taught Bensten, but I am a teacher here and I love your son and love following your bakery, and I just wanted to introduce myself!” It was so sweet.

Then another customer came up and introduced me to her son by saying, “This is the lady who makes the oatmeal cream pies you love.” His little face lit up, and it truly melted my heart.

I’ll attach a video of B doing his hype cheer because, well, I’m his proud mom and I warned you all I am feeling all the feels of his senior year! But Flint Hill really is such an amazing community, and we are so grateful to be part of it.

Saturday morning we were up bright and early for a cross country meet in Maryland. I was especially excited because the course was SIX MINUTES from where we usually go apple picking. Perfect! The whole family could watch Bensten run, and then I could drag everyone apple picking and come home with entirely too many apples.

Except apparently Mother Nature had other plans.

Did you all know that a late-April freeze destroyed much of Maryland’s apple crop this year? There is no pick-your-own at any of the Maryland orchards we have visited in the past. It made me so sad - not just because I love our annual apple-picking trip, but for all of those farmers who lost the income that comes from people like me buying way too many apples every fall!

So, I am offering caramel this week, but sadly I will not be picking the apples we dip in it!

After the very wet and cold race, we came home and did what our family does best on a rainy afternoon: we sacked out on the couch. I grabbed my laptop, fully intending to work on the menu…and promptly fell asleep.

I eventually woke up, helped Bensten get ready for Homecoming, and then Lance and I ran up to Neutral Ground for a quick dinner to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary. He has been traveling so much lately, and as I’m sure anyone with kids understands, sometimes it feels nearly impossible to have an uninterrupted conversation in the middle of everyone’s schedules.

As we were leaving the restaurant, we passed a cute family at a table and the husband said, “We love your cookies!”

I stopped in my tracks, slightly embarrassed because I didn’t recognize them. They introduced themselves, and his wife told me she recognized me from Instagram. They were so kind to stop us. And again, it just made me smile. Meeting more members of our little SS community!

I started the weekend thinking I was behind on the bakery because I was so busy with “regular life.” And instead, all weekend long, this little bakery kept popping up in my regular life!

I guess community can mean a lot of different things. We can all belong to a lot of different communities. But I certainly never set out to create a Schone’s Scones community and somehow, all of you have created one right along with me.

And I am incredibly grateful for our little village.

Speaking of our village, the very first thing to sell out last week was “Donations to Frontline.” That made me beyond proud. You all are incredibly generous. If anyone knows of another group in our community that you think we should support, please reach out!

And lastly - Halloween!

I’m already thinking about what I want to offer. I love making treats for all of your parties and events, so if there is something you would love to see on the Halloween menu, send me your ideas!

And if you need a special order, please email me soon. You would be surprised how many organized people out there have already placed their orders.  I will try to have the Halloween offerings ready and posted at least two weeks ahead of time so everyone has plenty of time to plan and order.

Hope you all have a great week. And thank you, truly, for being part of the Schone’s Scones community.

Xo,

Heather
