I ❤️ Frontline workers...

It’s no secret that I am really proud of Izzy. But I have a host of other emotions that go along with being proud of her. I am grateful she found a profession that she is so passionate about. I have to imagine she has a pretty great bedside manner and helps the scared kids feel a bit less anxious about their visit to the ER.

But I also worry. She sees a lot of tough stuff. Like way tougher than I ever imagined. I worry about the emotional toll it will take on her. She has been working nights (7pm to 7am) lately- and I try to be in the kitchen when she gets home- in case she wants to chat. She has a bit of a routine. Her shoes are left in the garage and she goes straight to shower/ then comes up to make breakfast before going to sleep. (Once a germ phobe- always a germ phobe -just like her mom. Hospitals are a freaking petri dish!!!)

Yesterday she looked really tired when she came up to the kitchen. She told me that on a good night, most of her patients will get treated and sent home. But last night- every one of her patients ended up being admitted- which means they were really really sick.

She told me about a few of the cases- and man it was tough stuff. Am I allowed to say a women came in and did not know she was pregnant- and gave birth in the hospital toilet. Izzy cared for the baby (about 30 weeks gestation) while the adult side cared for the mom. Yikes. I thought that kind of stuff only happened on TV.

Anyway, after Iz had gone down to bed, I received a text from a friend of mine who is a PICU doc at INOVA. She sent this pic- the first patient she has “inherited” from Isabel Amelie Schone R.N. She didn’t tell me which patient it was- just that “the lucky patient had the best ER nurse”. My doctor friend happens to also be the mom of 3 little kids - and was working a night shift. I'm pretty sure I would be the world's worst mom after a night of taking care of critically il kids. It’s quite the balance- and Julia does it with such grace.

Anyway, it made me really thankful we have people like Nurse Izzy and Dr. Julia and all of their co-workers who are there 24 hours a day in case our loved ones need anything. And the note from Julia made me realize it’s time to open up Frontline Donations so Schone’s Scones can show all the hospital workers how much our community appreciates them. I will open a few each week- so hop on our website. And we are more than happy to include a note- so be sure to let us know if you have a message to send!

Thanks so much for letting me gush about my girl. Ten years ago, when Bensten was in the hospital, I never would have imagined that my daughter would one day be the one taking care of these critically ill/ injured kids. So I guess you can say good does come from bad- cause Bensten's experience 1000% is why Iz chose to go into medicine.

Very grateful for all of our frontline workers!

xo,

Heather
