From Corsages to Courtrooms

Tomorrow is my first homecoming as a boy mom. Yes, I know the focus should be that it’s Bensten’s first big dance of high school….but he doesn’t seem one bit concerned with any of the details. And having been through lots of homecomings as a girl mom, I KNOW the details matter!!!

And boys!! Who knew one Y chromosome makes a human being so much less likely to speak! I mean, on what planet is a one word answer sufficient?

Truthfully, Bensten is a very easy kid. I call him my golden retriever child. He just does anything he is asked to do and does it with a pleasant disposition. But I don’t think he knows what he is supposed to do for Homecoming, and I would hate for his date to be disappointed. I mean, as it is, the sweet girl asked HIM. She made the poster. She did the heavy lifting…so the least he could do is have a pretty corsage for her.

But, he didn’t know what a corsage was.

And I had never purchased a corsage. So I called the florist that I had used for boutonnieres. They took my order and then said, “That will be $79.”

Excuse me. Was this a full body corsage? I just need a few flowers for a tiny wrist.

Even the lady on the phone said “I know, it’s crazy isn’t it.”

Here’s the thing- I love flowers. And I have rarely seen a corsage that is actually pretty. They stick together random flowers and glue it on an elastic band. Maybe throw in a ribbon or a bow!

So what did crazy-Heather do? Yup, I ordered all the supplies, and bought some pretty flowers, and yesterday I made a practice corsage! It’s perfect. And I had so much fun. (I actually worked at a florist when I was in high school, so it brought back fun memories!) So tomorrow, after Bensten’s cross country meet, I will be making a corsage for his date! At first I worried he would think it’s weird to have a home-made corsage, but then I realized he probably doesn’t know that all corsages aren’t homemade!

I am very excited he is now in town for homecoming. Originally we were supposed to be in Boston visiting Izzy, and as much as I am sad to think of her alone in Boston while most kids’ parents are there- BC is not in my good graces currently. We had a few zoom calls with the attorney this week, and BC has edited their original statements, indicating that the situation will be investigated- but they are still suspended. Eighty kids still had false accusations written about them in the Boston Globe. The New York Times. SwimSwam. Swimming World. So uncool, BC.

Lance is flying to Boston this week to sit in her “hearing”. She wasn’t present for any of the events in question, but at this point, we are leary of BC’s motives. They are all allowed an “advisor” to be present, so while Lance isn’t allowed to speak, he will at least be there for moral support, and to make sure it’s handled appropriately. (If anyone is wondering why I am not going, you can bet I would not be able to ‘not speak’!!)

Okay, this week's menu is soooo good! I love the new apple cinnamon muffins. And the brown butter pumpkin snickerdoodles are a labor of love. I don't actually like snickerdoodles all that much- and they are finicky. But I actually love these - and I hope you all do too! And just in case you didn’t know- carmelitas last a long time in the fridge. I almost always have a batch in my fridge, just in case!

(Pictured, my practice corsage, and then Bensten putting it the actual corsage on his date...I forgot to take a picture of it!)
