Longest Month Ever?

May. The longest month everrrrr. I love it, cause I finally have all my kids home. But man it’s chaotic. School plays, conferences, graduations, birthdays, baseball, summer swim starting….It’s stuff I love, but the schedule just seems like a big scary mountain that I keep trying to climb, but I lose my footing and slip a little so I never really make much progress. And the truth of the matter is I am my own worst enemy. Like, I decided to get my entire family room reupholstered, so we will have no furniture for the foreseeable future- including for Bensten’s birthday party! And I planned a trip to the beach, so we will actually be driving back and forth to make end of school events and games. And then there is May sickness. I didn’t realize our family suffered from chronic May sickness. Boeden had a mild cold and swimmers ear 2 weeks ago. Then on Wednesday, he had his big school musical performance (which was so good!) but afterwards, he was really really tired. I put him right to bed, but the next morning he just didn’t seem like himself. Just a mild sore throat, but I can tell my kids are sick by their eyes. We call them “sicky eyes.” Anyway, on a gut instinct, I made an appointment with the pediatrician- which I of course could not take him to, cause it was the exact time that Lil had an appointment to start her genetic testing at Children’s. (Izzy to the rescue!) Long story short, Boeden had strep. The kid with no tonsils or adenoids - managed to get strep throat! We realized…over the past 20 years of being parents, we have had 6 cases of strep- all in the month of May. The best one was when I gave birth to Bensten….the girls came to the hospital with sicky eyes…and sure enough, strep…which Lance then caught, which led to him to going to an urgent care and being prescribed an antibiotic that was way too strong and he ended up in the hospital with c-diff. Ahhh, good old strep in May. Anyway, the point of this boring rant is that- if Boeden had strep, I had to make sure I didn’t have strep before baking for all of you! So I called to make an appointment to get checked. My doc was booked. So I tried my other doctor. Booked. Izzy told me there were home strep tests, which I ran to buy. I then told Izzy that she got the honor of swabbing my throat….which I guess they don’t teach you in nursing school- so she watched a few youtube videos. (Boeden caught the attached video!) She did a great job, until the test didn’t register. Not even the control. (save your $50!!) So late last night, I found a Minute Clinic a few towns over and went for a strep check. They asked me “on a scale of 1 to 10, how much does your throat hurt?” Zero. I know, it was definitely unnecessary. But I would have worried - and you know worrying is my specialty. So a negative test just made me feel better! But man, MAY. Is it over yet? Next week we are baking on THURSDAY, so my crew can head to the beach for a few days! But I will offer a few things before we go in case you are entertaining, or need baked goods to take to parties!! Xo, Heather
