I am up to my eyeballs in cookie dough. (So this will be a quick note!)
Over the summer, one of our customers gifted Schone’s Scones to a friend who had just had breast cancer surgery. That friend has an affiliation with the Georgetown Lombardi Women, Connecting for a Cure.
She liked our cookies- and reached out to see if I would consider getting involved in an event benefiting Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research. https://lombardiwomen.georgetown.edu/ At the time I was drowning in sick kids and summer chaos. I asked her to call me back a few weeks later.
Over those couple of weeks, I kept thinking about the event. While donating 500 cookies sounded really daunting, cancer research is very near and dear to me.
Many of you know my sister Kirsten was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer when she was 40 years old. Her youngest daughter was still in pre school. That’s HARD! The treatment was HARD. Actually brutal. Multiple surgeries followed by weekly chemo (and a beautiful bald head) and then radiation. But thanks to the advancement in cancer research (and so many friends and family rallying behind her during her fight) she is a12(+) year cancer survivor.
So cancer research has left me very grateful. And ever since Kir’s diagnosis, my doctors have been very on top of my health. In fact, before starting any type of hormone supplementation my doctors made me get genetic testing. Luckily I do not carry any breast cancer genes (there are a lot- more than I realized!) BUT, they did discover I carry a colon cancer gene. I honestly was not shocked, my grandfather passed away quite young due to colon cancer. But I am now a frequent flyer at the colonoscopy scene. Not fun, but given the alternative- I will take it!
So while not a light blog topic, I do want to encourage any of you who are due for screening, be it a mammogram, colonoscopy, or annual check-up- please make the appointment. In fact, anyone who makes a screening appointment after reading this- send me a note and you get free baked goods! (Maybe not this week- my kids will be lucky to get dinners this week!!)
Have a great week. The menu is limited to allow me to support the event but I will try to add a few flash items if possible!
Xo,
Heather
PS- Some pictures from 2012 when Kir was battling breast cancer! She was gorgeous even without hair! My crazy brothers kept her laughing- even during chemo. And especially when they showed up at Race for the Cure with a huge embarrassing pic of Kir in high school on a sign! They say laughter is the best medicine....but scientists and research are quite important too! A link to the event is below. Izzy and I will be there! https://lombardiwomen.georgetown.edu/sponsorship/tickets/
