I can’t decide if I am losing my mind or not. I am sorta obsessed with organization. Not in an over-the-top way. I mean, I love looking at The Home Edit but their organization just doesn't seem like real life. Or at least like MY life.
If you follow us on Instagram you saw my new flour/sugar cabinet. I cannot express how much happiness this silly homemade cabinet on wheels brings me. It’s just so utilitarian, yet not ugly. I mean, if you didn’t know I had a bakery, you probably would think it’s just a cabinet. I have never dreamed of having a big house….but I have always wanted a tidy house where everything had its place. (And then God gave me Boeden who literally leaves a trail of fidgets and tools and shoes and single socks and mess wherever he goes!)
Speaking of Boeden, he might be the reason I crave order. He is the sweetest boy, but he is also a handful. The mix of being the youngest, and his challenges, he has gotten away with murder. I am trying to be more firm with him but I feel like for every step forward I take 2 steps back. For example, Thursdays are super stressful for him. He has swimming right after school, and not only does he have to rush from the bus to the pool (he has one speed- slowwww) but it’s also hard work (which he has learned to sweet talk his way out of 90% of the time!)
ANYWAY, back at the beginning of the year when his anxiety was really bad, I made him a stuffed heart, made from the same fabric as my favorite chairs. We clipped it to his backpack and surprisingly, it really helped him separate from me in the mornings. This Thursday I got a call 5 minutes after I dropped him off at his shuttle. He was crying and said his heart was lost.
I confidently told him we would find it and to look around the shuttle and that I would look around the house.
But It wasn’t at the house.
So I drove back to the McLean Hardware parking lot, where he catches the shuttle, and looked around. I even looked under people’s cars. (In case you heard people talking about the crazy lady roaming parking lots in McLean.) But it wasn’t in the parking lot.
I returned home and had so much work to do- but I kept thinking about the stupid heart. It wasn’t like I couldn’t make another one. I think the thought of Boeden being distraught over something with zero monetary value really tugged at my heartstrings.
As I thought through any possible place this heart could have been, I decided to text Danny- the manager at McLean Hardware. I knew it was a longshot, but just in case someone found a ratty heart in the parking lot and brought it into the store - could he let me know. I explained the significance but sorta laughed at myself as I typed the text. Not five minutes later- Danny called. SOMEONE had turned in the stuffed heart!!! I was shocked. I am not sure I would have picked up a random stuffed heart and walked it all the way up to the store. (Now I will!!!!)
But I am so grateful for people who take that extra minute to do something nice. It made me think of Jesse Itzler’s magic trick. I am a big fan of “magic”
I am also a big fan of McLean Hardware. That store is the epitome of hometown goodness. Do you know they had McLean Hardware/ B-Man shirts made when he was in his accident? And everytime I get one of my crazy building/organizing/remodeling ideas, that’s the first place I go for supplies!
Anyway, I digress, but I love any opportunity to make order out of my otherwise chaotic life. So even if it’s just finding a way to store nerf guns after years of failed attempts, I truly celebrate my solutions!! Not that anyone else is searching for a way to store nerf guns that is out of the way but also accessible- but just in case, I will attach pictures! And of course pictures of my new cabinet. And if I can find one- a picture of the freaking stuffed heart.
And I cannot believe Valentines Day is so soon. So we will bake this coming Friday, as well as the following Tuesday (Valentines Day Eve.) We will send an email with them Valentines menu and information about when the items will be available sometime this weekend! Stay tuned!
Have a great weekend!
